Dear Fellow ALPHA,
Reading the title to this article may have thrown you a little. How can success be found by losing balance within our lives? I know it sounds counter intuitive at first but go with me on it. If I am being completely honest, I believe having “balance” in our life is one of the most dangerous things to achieve, let me explain.
First, lets look at this word "balance". If you look it up, balance is defined as having even distribution or dividing something into equal proportions.
If we are talking about splitting the bill for a meal or sharing a blanket with a loved one on the beach, this is all well and good. However if you stop and think about it, you probably strive, subconsciously, for imbalance in many areas of your life.
I can only assume that you and I both share the same drive for more faith than fear, love than hate, health than sickness and more wealth than poverty. We want to see more peace than war, more parades than protests, more muscle cells than fat cells and more connection than loneliness. Last, but certainly not least, we definitely want more success than failure.
If we were to achieve balance in any of the aforementioned areas life would be a seesaw of misery, destruction and poorly fitting bikinis and board shorts. Not exactly the kind of existence many individuals strive for.
However, this word "balance" has been a “feel good” term used for years. Mostly to sell a lot of products and self-help courses. Let me be as clear as I possibly can, if you want to succeed at anything you will have to become imbalanced in an area of your life to achieve it.
After studying, as well as, working with some amazing people I can tell you with the utmost certainty that the only way greatness can be achieved is by spending a disproportioned -imbalanced - amount of time working on a specific project or task.
To refine a skill or create something of excellence it takes sustained focus and determination. Many times, this sustained focus occurs for hours at a time. Taking up an imbalanced amount of the day.
For example, some of the best parents I know spend an overwhelming amount of their day teaching, nurturing and loving their children. Many times this leaves little time for “themselves” however, the results are undeniable. Their children are some of the most well adapted and emotionally advanced kids I know.
Look at professional athletes, especially the ones at the top of their respective sports. These immensely gifted individuals spend 10 hours a day working on their craft. This includes working out, rehabbing, studying their opponents as well as practicing their skill. Many times these athletes leave the house before the sun is up and return home after everyone has gone to bed. Why do they do this? It is simple, they are striving to be successful!
Take a moment and search your mind, think of the most successful people you know. Try and think of people who are excellent at what they do, maybe it is an athlete, business owner, parent, student, janitor, carpenter, electrician, doctor or first responder.
I will bet they, at one time or another, spent an imbalanced amount of time on their craft. They know, even subconsciously, success requires an imbalanced amount of attention.
As I was writing this article I wanted to test this “theory” of imbalance. I thought back to some of my personal accomplishments. As I held my past accomplishments up to this theory of imbalance, I couldn’t find a time where I succeeded and didn’t have periods of imbalance.
No matter if it was writing a book, preparing for a bodybuilding contest, achieving a degree or starting a business. I found over and over again that my successful times were directly connected to my ability to put more time and energy towards one thing over another.
RAM was no exception. When starting RAM, Jeremy and I were working 65+ hours a week for months on end. No days off. This might sound shocking to some however this is the kind of imbalanced dedication it takes to get a lifestyle company like RAM off the ground. A company dedicated to maximizing individual potential through producing products, articles and services.
In life we only have so much time and energy. I believe if someone has a goal, a clear vision that they are passionate about, then they should focus a disproportionate amount of time toward accomplishing that goal.
It is also important that the friends and family of these driven individuals let them have their times of imbalance for it is truly the secret to their success.
Until next time,
Attack your life with passion!
